A Few Distinguished Members

Gerard Sekoto (1913-1993) portrayed Urban African life in places such as Sophiatown and District Six from the 30's onward. His work reveals the tumultuous vitality of South African hotspots and an emerging, virtually unknown black culture.

He moved to Paris in 1947 in a self-imposed exile. Sekoto's art was especially poignant owing to his deep loneliness and longing. It became significantly more political in the 1970s as a cause of the unrest in his homeland due to Apartheid. His days ended in a retirement home in Paris.

Another supremely talented South African artist worth mentioning is George Pemba (1912-2001). His work as a social historian focused on the simple lives of poor black people living in humble conditions in the townships. Sometimes humorously, he managed to portray their basic humanity.

The List Continues

John Koenakeefe Mohl (1903-1985) was one of the South African artists who stood out among his peers. He studied in Germany for five years and returned to establish South Africa's first art school for urbanized blacks.

He painted what was known to him in the townships, enhancing the disposition of his work with monochromatic hues and gentle brushwork. He captured the various moods of the landscape at different times with an impressionistic style.

Other South African artists include: William Zulu, Vuyile Cameron Voyifwa and Cyprian Shilakoe who made linocut a subgenre in South African artistic practice. Ephriam Ngatane and Durant Sihlali worked in watercolors and various media. These styles flourished as they used relatively accessible materials.

The oldest art objects in the world were discovered in a cave in South Africa. The Bushman peoples left a legacy of cave paintings and their tradition lives and breathes in the incomparable work of recent and contemporary artists found in South Africa.
